2011 Goal - Full fledged political blog

Here's one of my main goals for 2011 - go ahead and set up a full fledged political domain/blog, self-hosted and built on wordpress platform. I've been writing on blogger using a blogspot address for far far too long. All the newbies have passed me by, I'm still encouraging people to write on an old beat up platform.

Time for change, time for Hope, time for new ideas ... ooops went into political stuff there didn't I?

I control a bunch of blogs, none of which anyone actually reads except for the biggie Northwest Indiana Politics (originally Porter County Politics) I used to write on many of them every day, and then I started handling social media for fee for clients and had to use most of my writing time and energy for them. I'd like to write more free-form long posts in the coming year.

For the 40 and under crowd, the name Dan Coats carries with it little more than inherited admiration borrowed from those who recall his nearly two decades of public service. I respect Dan Coats because people who I respect, respect him. But at a time when the Republican Party is reinventing itself and ushering in fresh candidates who bring new energy and ideas, the hopes for a successful Coats campaign rest with a generation of voters on Medicare. That’s not exactly the post-Bayh future I was hoping for and it’s hard to see how Coats can effectively attract broad support and turn it into electoral success.

Republicans needed Coats to raise the profile of this race and put it in the national spotlight against a political giant. Now an open seat, it is among Republican’s top targets. Coats had his time, and I’m told he served his state well. Let’s thank him for his service and move on.

Indiana cities and towns slashing budgets

Cities and counties across the state are slashing their budgets and will face even more cuts next year when the HB1001 property tax caps come partially into play. The property tax reforms passed in the 2008 Indiana General Assembly followed tax protests across the state in 2007 that came on the heels of the defeat of more than 40 percent of the state’s incumbent mayors that November. A number of municipalities are also preparing to seek a variety of new local option taxes to make up for some budgetary shortfalls, heeding the advice of Gov. Mitch Daniels, House Speaker B. Patrick Bauer and Senate President Pro Tempore David Long who made that appeal in 2007 in a rare joint statement. The Lake County Council slashed its budget by $15 million on Tuesday night, cutting 112 jobs.

Gary, facing a huge budget shortfall, laid off 15 firefighters on Monday. The cuts are coming later this year after the Department of Local Government Finance extended the budget deadlines to December.

Our most successful site this year, for obvious reasons, was our political site here locally. What's been nice has been the traffic levels continuing after the election. Although I'd prefer to see subscribers growing (with 75-85 right now) and daily traffic between 50 and 120.

For December I'd like to set some goals for the site: 1) break 100 subscribers 2) average more than 100 visitors per day for entire month.

Here's the genesis of this artice: Rush Limbaugh read it today on air, I posted a tweet about it and then got quite a few requests for a link to the article from friendfeed followers. So I went searching, and (update) found the article on the author's blog.

I remember reading All the President's Men and thinking: That's journalism. You do what it takes to get the truth and you lay it before the public, because the public has a right to know. This housing crisis didn't come out of nowhere. It was not a vague emanation of the evil Bush Administration.

I have no doubt that if these facts had pointed to the Republican Party or to John McCain as the guilty parties, you would be treating it as a vast scandal. "Housing-gate," no doubt. Or "Fannie-gate."

For the first time in it's history the Indiana Chamber of Commerce stepped out and endorsed Mitch Daniels for Governor. Not too tough a call, since he's leading in all polls and in some by as much as 18%. But it does say a lot when all we're hearing about is a recession and credit market problems ... The Daniels administration is doing much better than almost all other states.

Presidential race tightens again

Polls and polls and more polls. In general the race is doing exactly what everyone expected, tightening to about 48% for each candidate and 4% still trying to decide.

I've commented elsewhere on undecideds and my shock that it's even possible to not be able to decide between two candidates with such differing views on where we go with this country.

IBD/TIPP Tracking Poll: Day Seven

After three days of gains by Obama, McCain bounced back slightly, reducing his opponent's lead from approximately 7 points to 5. McCain was helped by a jump in rural support from 50% to 56%, and by gains among people making $30k - $50k (7 point gain to 42%) and $50k - $75k (4 point gain to 35%). The race for Independents remains close with 40% favoring Obama, 38% supporting McCain and 22% still undecided.

We have nine presidential polls today.
Florida and Ohio, the two biggest swing states, are still swinging.
Today's polls put McCain ahead in Florida 49% to 47% and also ahead in
Ohio 46% to 45%, both statistical ties. Somewhat surprising is a new
poll in Montana in which McCain is leading by only 4 points in a state
Bush won by 20 points in 2004 and by 25 points in 2000. Together with
the statistical tie in North Dakota, it looks like a number of solid
Republican states may not be solid at all. Of course, a 4-point win in
Montana is as good as a 20-point win, but given the amount of money
Obama has and how cheap television time is in Montana, he could afford
a real blitz there.

Let's discuss Indiana's FSSA privatization

Obviously the big reason it's making any news right now is that Democrats and Unions were against the initial privatization. The "spokespeople" are a bit suspect coming from virtually non-existent ACORN like groups. I'd be curious where they're support comes from.

If you know something about the actual services provided, I'd love to hear your comments.

But to argue that something won't work primarily because it's being done with less money and less workers, is pretty 1970 liberal.

Key words in Mr. Cardwell's quote "more money" ... for what? More money is no solution. Oh yeah, one more misleading thing: Nancy Griffin is his wife, not necessarily another prized expert, not sure that was divulged at this mock press conference to attack Mitch Daniels.

Come one step right up and tell me about the actual services being provided and actual people we're helping, not the people who are mad that they used to do the work more expensively.

Just outside the statistical dead heat figure, Obama leads but barely. He's lost his lead with male voters and with military voters. Watch for other major polls to futher tighten today as well.

After making a move forward the day before, edging outside the margin of error, yesterday’s three-day rolling average showed Obama again sliding back. He still leads McCain by a 48.2% to 44.4% margin, an advantage of 3.8 percentage points. This comes after leading by 6.2 percentage points the day before.

McCain has flipped places with Obama among men, and now leads by an insignificant one percent, while Obama leads by 8 points among women, down from 11 points in yesterday’s report.

McCain has regained the lead among those in military families, and now leads in the group, 49% to 44%. Obama has held a small edge in that demographic group for a few days.

McCain moves ahead in electoral projections

After a month of positive movement in polls, electoral projections now who McCain moving ahead in electoral projections. Senate races still look like pick-ups for Dems, though I've suggested a better result of 49 Reps and 50 Dems with Lieberman playing spoiler.

We have 38 presidential polls today due to a large number of new ARG polls. The results are given below.
The upshot is that John McCain has taken the lead in the electoral college 274 to 243.

We also have a House poll in PA-11, where challenger Lou Barletta is leading incumbent Paul Kanjorski.
This may be the only House race in the country where an incumbent Democrat loses.

Porter County Commissioners Disrespectful

The other day I attended a meeting of the Porter County Commissioners.
The experience was not pleasant.
There was not a working sound system, but the room was so small that they shouldn’t have needed one anyway.
There were many people in attendance, mostly senior citizens, and yet these Commissioners spoke in such soft voices that nobody could hear what the heck they were saying.
They gave no consideration to the people in attendance and spoke so softly that nobody could hear a thing that was being said.

This is what sometimes happens to people once they get a job in government. They think all of a sudden that they don't have to be considerate or polite anymore.
Sickening.
I'll blame the guy running the meeting. His name is Robert Harper, I believe. What a joke.

The one thing everyone agrees the Obama camp have woken up to is the toxic effect on their chances of Mrs Palin's arrival on the national scene. Polls show that white women voters, attracted to her down home virtues, now support Mr McCain by a margin of 12 points, the same lead among white women that George W. The other week US News and World Reporter contacted me asking to do an interview on African American Republicans. The interview was an inquiry into why this blog was supporting McCain while other black Republicans were changing there vote. The interviewee Nikki Schwab was very balanced and incredibly fair in her questions. We spoke for over an hour even though I was incredibly tired from helping a friend move. Here is the excerpt she placed in the article entitled -Some Black Republicans Torn About Voting for Obama or McCain

~Another "very likely" McCain vote, but a more moderate one, will come from Richard Ivory, founder of the blog HipHopRepublican. Ivory has a different view of the Republican Party, one that downplays the past and focuses on building the party up from a local level and bringing in urban African-American voters. "My blog was about starting a dialogue—basically get people to understand some Republican concepts from an urban perspective," Ivory says. And like Varner at Howard University, Ivory finds that some are miffed by his Republicanness and don't quite understand why he would support a "white old guy." But with the general election in full swing, he has found a good way to express his feelings: "I tell my friends, my heart is with Obama, and my brain is with McCain," Ivory says.

Hammond Mayor doesn't like being questioned

Democrat Mayor of Hammond Indiana was irate when asked why city computers were being used to eliminate posts on the NWI Times message boards.

Buzz over at Blue County in a Red State noted the original article on the Times ... I've been a member on those boards for a couple years and actually didn't know that I could just sit and call any post I disagreed with "offensive" to get rid of the post.

Shame on city employees if they are using city time and shame on the Times for pretending to allow free speech and then letting people eliminate posts they disagree with.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been interviewed multiple times by federal investigators looking into allegations that he and key members of his administration offered contracts and state work in exchange for campaign fundraising help, according to documents unsealed Thursday.

The documents were made public in the Antoin "Tony" Rezko criminal case on the same day that Blagojevich held a major fundraising event at the River East Arts Center. Similar events in past years have reaped millions of dollars for the governor's campaign, much of it coming from firms that landed lucrative state contracts and individuals given coveted state jobs or board appointments.

an economist with the Illinois Department of Employment Security, announced that the unemployment rate in Illinois jumped one full point, from 5.4% to 6.4%.
Thousands more Illinoisans are looking for work, part of an unusually high jump in the state's unemployment rate in May that makes some puzzled and worried.

Illinois' unemployment rate jumped to 6.4 percent in May from 5.4 percent in April. That climb of one percentage point is the largest one-month increase here in more than 20 years and is the nation's third-highest increase in May. (Incidentally the economist bears the name of our Governor Mitch Daniels)

Bob Pastrick left the East Chicago mayor’s office following defeat in a 2004 special election prompted by rampant absentee ballot fraud in the regular contest a year earlier (Guinane, Times of Northwest Indiana). His last successful re-election, in 1999, later was tainted by the unearthing of a massive sidewalks-for-votes scandal that snared a trio of top aides and three city councilmen.

Comment: Indiana Democrat Superdelegate former Mayor Bob Pastrick is finally being pulled into trials relating to his corruption and theft from taxpayers to buy votes. Two choice for Attorney General, Linda Pence on the Democrat side who appears to be soft on these corruption charges so far, and Greg Zoeller who has vowed to take the prosecution all the way. It's time to clean out Lake County, feeling too much like neighbor Illinois.

The state's overall seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 4.8 percent in April to 5.3 percent in May, but Workforce Development director Teresa Voors said Indiana's rate is still lower than the U.S. as well as neighboring states.Michigan saw the highest rate among Indiana's neighbors with 8.5 percent unemployment.Illinois came in next at 6.4 percent with Ohio following close behind at 6.3 percent and Kentucky at 6.2 percent.Voors said advances in some areas have tempered the global economy's effect on the state."New business initiatives, such as life sciences, are diversifying the state's economy and lessening the severity caused by the current global economic slowdown," Voors said.

You choose. Do you want Barack Obama's Illinois style corruption, vote buying, tax increasing and economic messes? Or, do you want taxes reduced, government cleaned of both corruption and people that have been there too long, and economic investment and job creatoin?

Easy call for me.

Gun Control Ruling by Supreme Court

Obviously those that feel that guns are protected by the Constitution hailed this week's ruling as verification of that fact.

Many town hall participants are expected to be former supporters of Senator Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The town hall is part of the campaign's effort to build on growing support from voters who are rapidly joining "Citizens for McCain," a new grassroots organization headed by Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) to rally Americans of all political parties to support John McCain's candidacy.

"The American people know I have a long record of bipartisan problem solving," said John McCain. "They've seen me put our country before any president, before any party, before any special interest -- and before my own interest.
